Trades?
Even with Pettitte down, Hughes’ hiccups and Dr AJ Jekyll/Mr Hyde Burnett doing what he does, the Yankees still have the best rotation in baseball, so long as CC keeps winning, Vazquez hold on and Mitre proves to be a solid fill-in. Our lineup is always potent, so theres no real need to fill any non-existant holes. So as the trade deadline looms, our old friend, the bullpen, is what needs the most help.
Why?
Joba is shakey, and I dont trust him with a slim lead late…I cringe when Park takes the mound, Mitre is now a starter, Aceves is out with no sign of returning, Marte is out as well while Im afraid of seeing Robertson take the hill and Gaudin hasnt exactly been a beacon of light.
Theres Mo. But while the 9th inning is, as always, a no doubter-the 7th and 8th are pretty much up in the air, especially when October comes.
Our only decent AAA guy, Albaladejo, is currently on roster thanks to Pettittes injury so the only real option is to turn to the trade market and see whos offering…and unlike Seattle, we should look for people who are serious about trading with us.
-Toronto: Scott Downs, Kevin Gregg
So the Blue Jays hot start is only a memory and theyre tossin up the white flag on the season, content knowing at least 4th place isnt dead last…and theyre movin their bullpen.
Downs is another Marte apparently, but with Marte hurt, why the hell not.
Gregg is a guy with closer exp, but with Mo, he can translate that exp into an 8th inning situation, which contains just as much pressure because the 8th inning against the Yankees might as well be the 9th because you sure as hell aint beating Rivera.
So I hope the Yankees go for Gregg, because he wouldnt be any worse than what we already have…though dealing with the Blue Jays is always an infuriating ordeal (“We want ALL your prospects for our one pitcher”)
-Cleveland: Kerry Wood
I know, I know, this screams “Carl Pavano” what with his high price tag and extremely-prone-to-injury history. But, like Pavano, Wood can be lights out when healthy. Hes had a rough start in Cleveland, but hes been picking it up lately.
…Lets just save him for the July 31-better-than-nothing plan.
-Kansas City: Joakim Soria
I might as well entertain this idea…though I feel the Royals might be a tad bit mad to offer him up, and the price tag wouldnt be small. To be fair, he would be the best guy available and a no-brainer 8th inning and a Mo-needs-a-day-off-so-let-someone-else-close.
-Kyle Farnsworth
…just kidding. I like him, but he just cant cut it…
Until further notice, Joe Girardi is not allowed to use the bullpen phone
Seriously, what the hell was that about today? Its one thing if its the postseason and Girardi does his ever changing relief pitcher trick….but a regular season game against the Cleveland Indians? The Cleeeeeeevland Indians? Are you kidding me, Joe?
Either our starters need to go 8 innings each or Girardis father needs to step in and limit his phone time like hes a 14 year old girl….and our starters probably could go 8 innings if Girardi wasnt so eager to pull the bullpen trigger once the 7th inning rears it face…
Why did the Yankees lose today? Lets break it down…the top of the 7th inning from todays game, shall we?
0 outs…0 on…Yankees lead: 10-5
Enter-Robertson
Sabathia didnt exactly bring it today, Im aware. No one can really fault Girardi for changing pitchers after CCs 5 runs in 6 innings performance…besides, the Yankkes lead by 5 runs…
…So Robertson hits a batter, gets a flyout to deep left and allows a stolen base…then comes the RBI single to Kearns. What the hell, Dave? Then it turns out his back is in bad shape so Girardi needs to turn to another pitcher…
lets recap…1 out…1 on…Yankees lead: 10-6
Enter-Mitre
Lets not panic ladies, we still have a lead and Im pretty sure Mitre isnt injured….so after he walks the 1st batter he meets, Girardi yanks him…wait, what? What the hell just happened?
This might have something to do with a left handed pinch hitter comming in, which means Girardi feels the obligated need to turn to his one-trick-pony:
Enter-Marte
……….Ok. Whatever. True to form, Marte gets his lefty to fly out for out #2…and true to form, Girardi doesnt feel the need to let him pitch after that.
Enter-Joba
Really, Joe? 4 pitchers? You’ve used 4 pitchers in the inning? I need a recap…
2 outs…2 on…Yankees lead: 10-6
Ok ok, if the ends justify the means, I wont complain…
But they didnt, because Joba had a meltdown (single, walk, double, double, single), giving up 6 runs before he could get the 3rd out.
3 outs…1 left on…Indians lead: 12-10
Why the hell did Mitre and Marte only pitch to a batter each? I might be able to buy that Mitre didnt have much warmup time, so it was all a big stall while Marte warmed up, but I wont.
What the hell is wrong with Marte that hes never allowed to throw a pitch to a right handed hitter? Are they batting 1.000 against him or something? Is he deathly afraid of a righty? Is there a stipulation in his contract saying under no circumstances will he be allowed to throw to a righty?
We need to set a 2 out/10 pitches minimum on every reliever…or chain Girardi to his seat once he changes pitchers.
As the president weeps…
Not even a week removed from their visit to the White House, the Yankees had to deal with the White Sox…the alleged favorite team of the president himself. And what better way to follow the pro-White Sox speech the prez gave at the Yankee championship visit than by beating the Chisox…but not just beat them, spot them 3-0 and 4-2 leads before beating them 6-4.
And how did we beat them? An offensive charge led by our own president, Derek Jeter
…a gritty start by our own speaker of the house, Andy Pettitte
…and the door slammed closed by our own vice-president, Mariano Rivera.
Yeah, any doubts over if we would win that game?
Todays game will be a bit more of an adventure, with Sec of Agriculture, Javy Vazquez on the hill. Our forgien diplomat (Girardi) better start the A lineup, because we’re gonna need every run we can get.
Onto todays game…
Top 1 in New York
Fire up the bomb shelters, Vazquez is pitching!
…Jorge chases a foul ball, tosses his mask away and nails the umpire with it….if we dont get any close calls after this, you’ll know why…
……..and to the complete shock of everyone, Vazquez surrenders a homerun. 1-0 Chicago.
Bottom 1 in New York
Nick Swisher isnt in the lineup…nice.
Somebody told Tex that its now May, and he rips a single to left as a result…
Top 2 in New York
Who had 2nd inning in the Vazquez booing poll?
Vazquez must like an ERA of 9.00, cuz he gave up another run this inning…
Top 3 in New York
The only person bothering Vazquez more than Andrew Jones (2nd home run) is Ozzie Guillen, who made him change gloves.
Bottom 3 in New York
Gardners on 1st base…gentlemen, start your engines…
…thank God its May, another hit for Tex…Gardner scores, 3-1 CWS
…just found out Strasburg is commin to AAA. My butt has got to go see him while I can…
Top 4 in New York
Sergio Mitre in to pitch after yet another Vazquez meltdown. Mitre should be starting, not Vazquez.
Any chance we can put Vazquez on the DL for “depression” or somethin?
Middle of 6 in New York
Mitres showing Vazquez how to pitch as hes been shutting down Chicago…why isnt he the #4 starter?
Middle 2 in Philadelphia
Anyone else notice how much more relaxed Joe Buck sounds when he does a non-Yankee game? Its like there less pain since nop ones twisting his arm to announce his most hated team…
Bottom 7 in New York
Yankees took the lead….Yankees lost the lead. Why? Girardi went to the bullpens version of Vazquez: Robertson. Can someone tell me why Mitre couldnt go beyond 3 innings?
Bottom 4 in Philadelphia
Oh the Mets…gotta love ya. 2 dropped pop liners. Phillies lead 1-0.
Game Over in New York
Why did Mitre leave after 3 shutdown innings of work? The man did come up as a starter, so dont feed me any BS about being tired…instead he left and the mop up reliever comes in and blows our lead…Mitre better be hurt…
I need to end on a good note…
Bottom 7 in Philadelphia
8-0 Phillies over Mets?
Heh, allllllllright…
Week 3 in review: One of these things is not like the others
I’ve said this before, but its still true. The Yankees have so few actual issues this year that they stand out like a sore thumb. The Yankees are 12-6, much thanks in part to our unmatched rotation. The following are the stats of our 5 starters, Ill let you figure out who doesnt fit in well:
Sabathia: 2-1, 3.00
Burnett: 2-0, 3.20
Pettitte: 3-0, 1.29
Vazquez: 1-3, 9.00
P. Hughes: 2-0, 2.19
Thats right, our bad *** rotation has a record of 10-4. Factor out the obvious weak link and that transitions into a 9-1 record. Seriously.
We may not have Roy Halladay or Tim Lincecum, or even the Wainwright-Carpenter combo, but we do have the strongest overall rotation in baseball, even if Vazquez cant get the job done.
That being said, what are we to do about Vazquez? He is the only starter we have thats not getting the job done. Dont believe me? Lemme recap how our starters did last week:
Tue: Vazquez – W – Could not get through 6. Only won cuz our lead was just too big.
Wed: Hughes – W – Near no-no. Completely unhittable.
Thu: Sabathia – L – Only Kurt Suzuki really hurt him. Pitched a pretty decent game otherwise.
Fri: Burnett – ND – Was a bit wild, but what else is new? Left with a tie.
Sat: Pettitte – W – Angels couldve been using tennis rackets and they still wouldve lost.
Sun: Vazquez – L – Just plain bad. I missed most of it, and Im kinda glad I did.
Vazquez isnt getting the job done. But since the whole team is doing so well right now, we can still give him the benefit of the doubt and hope he figures himself out. Its worth noting that his strikeouts are comming as advertised, but thats about it.
If panic time DOES show up, I dont think Joba is the answer. Mitre would be. Jobas too valuble in the pen. But Vazquez still has time…provided the other 4 starters continue to dazzle.
Biggest Yankee Game
4/21/10 Yankees-3, As-1
Phil Hughes became the 2nd Yankee this year to carry a no-no through 7 innings. And both near-no-nos came against some pretty good teams. The win was less about Hughes and more about the entire Yankees pitching staff, which definatly is for real this year. Hughes struck out a career high 10 batters and was just plain nasty. Joba came in and get the Yankees through the 8th and Mo saved another one.
2 near-no-nos and its only April. Niiiiiiiice.
Favorite Picture
So, ARod is on 1st base in a game against Oakland when Cano fouls a ball off. When the ball finally fell foul, Rodriguez had gone all the way to around 3rd base and had to go back to 1st…so he cuts across the diamond which involves going through the pitchers mound….right in front of pitcher Dallas Braden. Braden cries like a woman about it, b!tches to ARod about it (while walking in the opposite direction) then kick some cups, which bounce around and nail him on the head as he walks by. Classic.
Outside of Oakland, I doubt that anyone even cares about a guy names Dallas Braden, let alone what hes complaining about. Does ARod care? Judgeing from the above picture, I doubt he does.
Fantasy
My Roid Sox team won a see-saw battle last week to improve to 2-1 on the year. Still one game back from 1st place, but they are tied for the most overall points scored in the league.
The Showdown lost a heartbreaker 210-209. Their still only 1 game back as well though, and their takin on one of those 1st place teams this week.
cpDOOM 2.0 crushed their opponent last week, but are also out of 1st by 1 game. This week they face that 1st place team, which will make things so very interesting.
I finally figured how the scoring system works in rotisserie baseball, and was pleased to see my Pretenders team jump to 1st place, thanks to my pick up of Brett Gardner who has been stealing me bases in bunches. The end of the weekend saw them fall to 3rd place, but theyre still close.
Gardner was such a great pickup, I picked him up for my F*cking Lozers team as well. Combined with Michael Bourn, Ill never lose in Stolen Bases again.
The injury bug meanwhile has been raping them, causing me to take unexpected actions. Ive stopped banking on Nick Johnson breaking out of his slump and decided to pick up Ty Wigginton for some added versitility. Otherwise, theyre doin fine, just 3.5 games back despite the crappy week 1.
This Week
The Yankees head up to Baltimore to hopefully enjoy an easy sweeping of the Orioles. Afterwards, theyll head home and host the White Sox. Yankees better rack up the easy wins while they can, because theyve got a gauntlet comming up after this comming homestand.
Spring Training WAR! Hugh! Good Its ENDING Ya’ll!
The end is near, folks. The battles are either over, of almost obvious at this point. Lets recap:
LEFT FIELD
The Winner: Brett Gardner
As the only person with an average over .200, Gardner made this choice very easy. His slow start this spring made it interesting since the other comeptitors were also slumping, but seeing how the other two never broke out of their slumps, Gardner took a stroll to victory. He may not have had any homers, but 2 triples arent bad either. His lone stolen base, having actual XBH and having more hits than the other 2 combined made this battle a no-brainer.
The losers?
Winn will probably serve as the #4 outfielder. His numbers failed to impress though, so if Gardner struggles this year, he wont lose his job (unlike last year when Melky took it from him)
As for Thames. I said at the beginning it was either win or die for him (die = AAA) but since Jamie Hoffman is history, Thames is safe in the big leagues, as the 25th man on the roster.
yawn.
I also said at the beginning that Gardner might have a shot at pushing Grandersopn into left and taking center for himself. That might happen and Girardi will answer that by friday….odds are that prolly wont happen, but you never know.
STARTER #5
The Winner: ??? (answer friday)
Still Contending: Phil Hughes, Sergio Mitre, Alfredo Aceves
Aceves is still a long shot, especially after his recent beatings, while Hughes’ recent crappiness via the long ball is being played off as “wind-aided”…Mitre is looking good and if you dont believe me.
I still think Mitre deserves the win here. All you really need in a #5 starter is consistency, and Mitre has been the only contender to show that. Whatever happens though, whoever wins will not keep the job all year since I imagine theyll have a very short leash.
The losers?
Joba sucks as a starter. I think the majority can agree on that idea. I’d rather see him pitch five 8th inning stints in a week than see him pitch 5 innings a start.
….and Gaudin might not even stay in NY, and Im not talking about AAA either. Hes on waivers, and will either be traded or released.
I have a feeling someone will be sent to AAA, and Ive got an unfair feeling itll be Mitre…
Thats right, feed me ego!
Soooooo…visit the MLBlog front page lately? Their highlight this week seems to be fantasy drafting, and yours truely is one of a few blogs theyve put a link up for…so yeah, Im even more awesome than usual this week.
Anyway, my teams are all set, you can check out a couple of them on your own:
Yahoo league:
F*ucking Lozers
Pretenders
Anyway…
1st up, I had been getting a lot of flack from my co-owners of my Showdown fantasy team over the little glitch I suffered early in the draft. I made up for it though by trading for Ellsbury. All should be forgiven.
The countdown is nearing zero for Girardi to make the decisions for the Yankees’ new #5 starter and final outfielder. Hughes played today all but locked up as the winner….and surrendered 4 runs in 4.1 innings, including a walkoff homerun…ouch.
You know who looks like the winner now?
Sergio Mitre.
Hes the only one of the 5 contenders who hasnt had an bad stint this spring, his ERA is lower than the others, his K total has been higher and I dont see him really as a bullpen pitcher. This might be his time. Hughes, Joba and Aceves would make a killer bullpen anyway.
Prolly wont happen though, but it should.
Meanwhile, Gardner is a lock for the outfield job. Thames has been bad, but with Jamie Hoffman gone, theres a place for Thames on the 25 man roster, so he at least doesnt have to worry about starting the year in AAA.
I also managed to catch a glimpse on TV of the Reds phenom: Chapman. He gave up a handleful of runs before getting the hook over what appeared to be an injury. The runs were unearned, but his control near then end seemed less than perfect. The runs may have been unearned, but those walks were all on him…his fastball was as advertised, but thats it. His slider was sloppy.
The salvation of Cincinatti may still take a while.
…now if you dont mind, Im off to drink up to my temporary internet fame…
Spring Training MADNESS!!!
So Phil Hughes pitches 4 innings for the Yankees today and picks up a save, not that theres a closer job to win…Hughes is now right up there with Aceves and Mitre for the #5 slot. Gaudin seems to have fallen into an anonymous position while Jobas struggles have put him in a long shot position. Heres some stat leaders to ponder over:
Innings: ERA:
Aceves (10) Aceves (0.90)
Mitre (9) Hughes (2.08)
Hughes (8.2) Mitre (3.00)
Ks: BB:
Mitre (7) Aceves (0)
Aceves (5) 3 tied (2)
Gaudin/Hughes (4) Chamberlain (6)
Hits Allowed
Aceves (3)
Mitre (7)
Hughes (7)
Meanwhile, the final outfield slot is wide open as all three entries have failed to stand out.
H-AB: R:
Gardner (4-22) Garnder (4)
Winn (2-15) Winn (2)
Thames (2-18) Thames (0)
BB: SO:
Gardner (4) Gardner (2)
Winn (1) Winn (4)
Thames (0) Thames (6)
OBP:
Gardner (.308)
Winn (.188)
Thames (.158)
More or less, it seems like a strait up 1-2-3 with Gardner leading the way followed by Winn, with Thames bringing up the rear. It looks like Thames is going down to AAA to start the year with Winn riding shotgun. To be fair though, Gardner has had more opprotunities, but Thames and Winn have had the same tries and Winn has the edge over Thames, so the fate of Marcus seems all but sealed.
So, slowly yet surely, the 2010 Defending World Champion Yankees are figuring out the final specifics to the roster.
Yeah….dont repair the elbow tear….WHAT COULD GO WRONG?
Joe Nathan feels that he doesnt need surgery to repair an elbow tear…good luck with that.
…wonder how the Twins feel about that logic…
Interesting, with all the injuries going around, people seem to finally be ignoring how Mo Rivera is older than dirt.
What o what is happening in baseball today?
Stephen Strasburg debuts for the Nats today, and if his hype is anything like Chapman, then he wont disappoint.
Sabathia is making his 2nd start today for the Yankees. I will attempt to watch the game on YES today and maybe make any peanut-gallary-inspired comments I feel. I doubt he’ll disappoint. Burnett and Vazquez did decent in their runs.
Meanwhile, in the war for #5…
Aceves: 6IP, 0H, 0BB, 0R, 4K
Mitre: 5IP, 2H, 1BB, 0R, 4K
Gaudin: 4IP, 4H, 1BB, 3R, 3K
Hughes: 2IP, 1H, 1BB, 1R, 0K
Chamberlain: 1.1IP, 3H, 3BB, 3R, 1K
Aceves and Mitre are out in front early while Joba falls way behind. Aceves is a long shot and is already a lock in the bullpen, so Mitre is looking good right now in my book.
Also…
Gardner: 1-12, 0R, 0HR, 1RBI, 1BB, 0SB
Thames: 1-9, 0R, 0HR, 0RBI, 0BB, 0SB
Winn: 1-7, 1R, 0HR, 0RBI, 0BB, 0SB
So still no standouts for the last outfield slot. its also worth noting though that Winn and Thames have both struck out 3 and 4 times respectively. So I’d say Gardner leads…by a lead so small that it cant be measured.
TOP 1
CC on the mound, 5 of 8 regular Yankees in the field with Winn in left and a couple AAAs.
Pirates facing us.
McCutchen just singled…followed by a double…
Man, if I’m a rookie fighting for a roster spot in spring training, I’d be psyched to face a pitcher with nothing to compete for like Sabathia. Theyre not entirely into it (just working on a certain pitch or two) and I hammer him and look good for my team.
3 run shot makes it 4-0 Pirates…btw…
BOTTOM 1
I noticed Girardi made the lineup today of Jeter leading off followed by Nick Johnson, with Granderson down in the order. Granderson not a top of the lineup guy.
Charlie Morton for Pittsburgh starting with a rotation spot on the line.
Morton will probably do better than CC for that reason. Hes got a job to win, CC doesnt. I could be wrong cuz most of this lineup is made of Yankee regulars…
…aaaaaaand Johnson has gone yard. 4-1 Pirates.
BOTTOM 3
So yeah….Johnson goes deep again. I like what I see with him this year.
5-3 Pirates.
BOTTOM 4
Johnsons day ends 2-2, 2HR…not too shabby….his pinchhitter comes in and ties the game w/ a double. Nice.
…and Jorge gives us a 7-6 lead with a 2 out RBI!
TOP 8
Ah, the game has now become a AAA game rather than a ST game.
Pirates retake the lead, btw…8-7
