2010 ALCS vs Rangers…Game 6

Yeah, Im a bit late, who cares…

Yankees did a lot of things right in this series:
-Give the ball to Wood and Mo
-CC pitching at home
-Anytime Cano got to hit
-Convincing Vazquez the Yankees were playing the Angels in the ALCS and sending him on a 1-way plane to Anaheim while everyone else went to Texas.

…and they did a lot of things wrong:
-Burnett ever pitching
-Everytime Robertson came in to pitch
-Posada falling for a double steal
-Did I mention Burnett?

Girardis pitching rotation for this series was a joke.

Girardis rotation:
1-Sabathia
2-Hughes
3-Pettitte
4-Burnett
5-Sabathia
6-Hughes
7-Pettitte

The problem there was there wasnt enough Pettitte and too much of Hughes and Burnett.

My, better, and Yankee winning rotation:
1-Sabathia
2-Pettitte
3-Burnett
4-Sabathia
5-Hughes
6-Pettitte
7-Sabathia

Sabathia on short rest (works), Pettitte earlier and twince on normal rest, Hughes only once and at home, then be available in the pen the rest of the way (also a bullpen option for game 1)…and Burnett pitching in game 3 where it wouldnt matter how well he pitches cuz the Yankees were losing that game anyway.
Yankees wouldve won games 1 and 2, Rangers win game 3…game 4 would be ours, game 5 would be up in the air but Pettitte wouldve won game 6. Game-set-series-and Yankees go to California.

…just saying

….Im actually glad the Giants won. Joe Buck now doesnt get to talk about dynastys…Im alos gonna root for the Giants in this series, if only to prevent Ron Washington from doing lines of coke off the trophy.

Week 16 in review: I still dont care about Tampa Bay

So the Yankees continue to beat up the opposition and Boston continues to slip back farther and farther in the standings. Currently the Yankees hold an 8 game lead over the Red Sox.

….but oh yeah, theres that team from Tampa thats only 3 games behind us?

Yeah…I guess they count too. I dunno, I guess Im just used to the Devil Rays…or maybe Im too used to the BoSox always being the team biting at our heels for 1st. Either way, unless the Rays can actually overtake us, then I reserve the right to not care about them.

Biggest Yankee Game:
7/26/10: Yankees-12, Royals-6
Why the hell not? Multiple multiple home run players. With all those home runs, none are from Rodriguez. The freak “balk” from Posada when he tossed his mask and it rolled onto the ball. Rain…..ok, maybe not so much the rain.

“Thats gotta hurt!”
Not so much a pic, but easily the funniest thing Ive seen all year.

Fantasy:
A few weeks ago, I traded to aquire Magglio Ordonez for the Showdown and things were kinda turning around. I believe the Vegas odds for the Showdown making the playoffs improved to about 20:1 because of that trade…..
…and now he’s out. Lovely. Vegas has them back at 80:1

This Week:
Cleeeeeeeeeeeeveland…and then we head down to play that 2nd place team in our division.

Week 15 in review: AJ Burnett leaves game early because his pants are on fire

So yeah, short week, not much to recap on. Only 3 games, but a loaded 3 games. Fridays win for the boss and voice, Saturdays AJ lying loss and Sundays bittersweet thrashing of David Price, in which we lose Pettitte for about a month.

The paramount issue is Burnett, whos Jeckle/Hyde routine is currently set on Hyde and flashes of his wild thang persona seem to be attributed to his being lazy, which is one hell of a warning sign that his Yankee days might be numbered, especially if we need to pick up an arm or two by the deadline…

Biggest Yankee Game:
7/16/10: Yankees-5, Rays-4
The Yankees honor not 1, but 2 legends of the game before the game. The entire game is played without any PA announcments (even the recording for Jeter) to honor Sheppard. A see-saw emotional rollercoaster that involved back-to-back home runs from Cano and Posada to tie the game, and another home run by Swisher to tie it up in the 8th…and then a walk off hit by Swish to clinch it.
I dont care how many no hitters are being pitched this year, this here was game of the year.

Favorite Picture:

Fantasy:
I hate All Star week games, because theyre so short it always feels like cheating when you win, or you got cheated when you lose. I tend to win mostly thsi time of year, but I still think the stats should just carry over to the next full week.

This Week:
Our homestand continues against the Angels and Royals.
Man, remember when Steinbrenner started in New York and the Royals were actually good? Me neither, most of us werent even born yet.

……….BTW, Tim McCarver is STILL a f*cking idiot

Yankee-Hating Retard of the day: Cecilio’s Scribe

I’d figure since I brouse through other sports blogs from time to time, and since 90% are anti-Yankees, then I can highlight a couple from time to time and point out why theyre wrong.

Kicking this thing off: Cecilio’s Scribe
Now heres a winner. This post is what qualifies them for a stoning. Hes complaining about our 24 year old backup catcher, Francisco Cervelli because of the way he celebrates.

He starts out by showing off his Mets heritage and talks about rooting for a team that will never escape the shadow of the Yankees. All legit and true.
They almost get out of the 1st paragraph without sounding like a dumb*ss, but they closed it by calling Paul O’Neill dislikable and whiney. That was a fatal error.
Calling the Ultimate Warrior annoying and dislikable? Are you serious? Did you not watch game 5 of the 01 World Series? The whole f*cking stadium was giving him an ovation and chanting his name. That kind of respect will never grace the ears of ARod, Tex or Sabathia.
If the Mets had a player like O’Neill, they mightve actually made a couple more world series appearences.

Anyway, this guy only touched on O’Neill. His true target was out backup catcher: Cervelli.

Hes apparently someone you “Love to hate” which to me is odd, since putting on a Yankees uniform tends to be enough for most haters to “love to hate” you…

The reasons are clear for anyone who’s watched this 24 year-old kid play. He’s over-exuberant, cocky, theatrical and antagonistic. No matter if it’s the fourth inning of a game they’re losing, the seventh inning of a blowout win or the top of the first, Francisco is fist-pumping and primal screaming on every inning-ending strikeout. If he throws someone out at second? Well, then be prepared for an even more enthusiastic celebration. The Terminator has eliminated you, Mr. Baserunner, and he will now show you up in his home plate mini-dance, fist-pump, animal roar routine”

So…having fun out there is bad?
Ive always figured its a crime if you dont celebrate on the field. I mean seriously, lemme put this into perspective.

Of all the young boys, only a certain amount will play baseball well in school.
Fewer will go on to play college baseball.
Fewer than that will actually be drafted.
Fewer than that will make it into AAA.
And a select few will even make it into the big league and last.
Those are some pretty steep odds to overcome if you even wanna make it. So for the select few who can overcome the odds and not only make it, but stand out as the best at what you do, then no one should blame you for celebrating when you make a big play.

And why shouldnt he celebrate? Cervelli is the best defensive catcher since Ivan Rodriguez c.1998. Hes as good at his position as Strasburg is at pitching.

Ive been sold on this kid being good since I saw him play in the last WBC, and even more so when I met him in person while he was AAA. After that, the rest of baseball was sold last year when he came in for both Posada and Molina when they were injured and handled himself just fine.
Hell just last week the kid gunned down a potential base stealer at 2nd. He gunned the ball FROM HIS KNEES and still caught the runner.

Why not celebrate? Its a game. Remember that.
If I were paid millions of dollars a year to throw a ball around, I’d be as happy as a freakin clown. Even if I were on the Orioles, I’d be happy because my job is to play a game all year.

I didnt have an issue when Jose Reyes did his retarded little leg kick while turning a double-play against us last weekend. I thought Joba was 100% justified in all his fist pumps. There is nothing wrong with celebrating, unless youre strait up trying to belittle the other guy (see: 2003 ALDS Derek Lowe)

If you read their post, youve probably already realized that the whole thing was manifested by a Met fans jelousy for the Yankees. Our backup catcher is better than their starting catcher.

Cervelli is young, a defensive phenom, and he has no problem putting everyone on notice about it…and theres not a single thing wrong with that.

…BTW, feel free to comment to Cecilio’s Scribe.

……BTW again, Cecelio fancies the blog as “A sports blog for those who remember the days when it was OK to throw inside, hit the quarterback and trash talk a bit” …and yet celebrating is going too far?

Seeing Strasburg in person

Ah the joys of living in a minor league town. Ticket prices are much lower and its still professional baseball. Tonight, I had the pleasure of seeing the phenom in person in Stephen Strasburg as he made his debut for AAA Syracuse against the Braves’ AAA team.

How’d he do?
6 IP, 0R, 1H, 1BB -or- F*CKING NASTY!

Thus far the man has been as advertised as the real thing. He hit 96/96 on the radar gun all night, going as high as 99 a couple times in the 1st.
Following a 97mph fastball with an 81mph changeup just doesnt seem fair.

At the plate? He went 1-1 with 2 RBIs and a sacrifice…Thats right, he drove in more runs than hits he allowed. This man is ready for the AAAA that is the National League.

The lone hit he allowed was a hard grounder right up the middle, which was all good hitting on the part of the hitter. No runner got to 3rd base.

…I took video on my cell in case anyone I know doesnt believe me.

The Stadium was PACKED, an actual sell out, probably for the 1st time in a decade. And just about everyone left when Strasburg was pinch hit for…

Syracuse is kicking butt late, so its safe to say that Strasburg will get the W.

Also, Syracuse games feature a Taco Bell promotion where a hitter on the opposing team is named the “K-Man”…if the K-Man strikes out at all in the game, everyone gets a free taco…Strasburg strikes the guy out 1st chance he gets, so I get a free taco. Sweet.

What did I miss?

The Yankees are currently putting the rape down on the Red Sox.
Phil Hughes is owning the Sox like nobodies business while Josh Beckett continues to struggle against the Yankees (and as a Red Sox pitcher, if you cant beat the Yankees, you dont have a job)
Cano got beaned (I didnt see it, but Ill cry INTENTIONAL anyway) and left the game. Nick Johnson left as well. Added to Pettitte, Granderson and Posada, I dont like how these injuries are starting to pile up…

Man…9 runs…It might have been safe to let Vazquez pitch after all….go figure…

As the president weeps…

Not even a week removed from their visit to the White House, the Yankees had to deal with the White Sox…the alleged favorite team of the president himself. And what better way to follow the pro-White Sox speech the prez gave at the Yankee championship visit than by beating the Chisox…but not just beat them, spot them 3-0 and 4-2 leads before beating them 6-4.

And how did we beat them? An offensive charge led by our own president, Derek Jeter

Jeter.jpg…a gritty start by our own speaker of the house, Andy Pettitte

Pettitte.jpg…and the door slammed closed by our own vice-president, Mariano Rivera.

Mo.jpgYeah, any doubts over if we would win that game?

Todays game will be a bit more of an adventure, with Sec of Agriculture, Javy Vazquez on the hill. Our forgien diplomat (Girardi) better start the A lineup, because we’re gonna need every run we can get.

Onto todays game…

Top 1 in New York
Fire up the bomb shelters, Vazquez is pitching!

…Jorge chases a foul ball, tosses his mask away and nails the umpire with it….if we dont get any close calls after this, you’ll know why…

……..and to the complete shock of everyone, Vazquez surrenders a homerun. 1-0 Chicago.

Bottom 1 in New York
Nick Swisher isnt in the lineup…nice.
Somebody told Tex that its now May, and he rips a single to left as a result…

Top 2 in New York
Who had 2nd inning in the Vazquez booing poll?
Vazquez must like an ERA of 9.00, cuz he gave up another run this inning…

Top 3 in New York
The only person bothering Vazquez more than Andrew Jones (2nd home run) is Ozzie Guillen, who made him change gloves.

Bottom 3 in New York
Gardners on 1st base…gentlemen, start your engines…

…thank God its May, another hit for Tex…Gardner scores, 3-1 CWS

…just found out Strasburg is commin to AAA. My butt has got to go see him while I can…

Top 4 in New York
Sergio Mitre in to pitch after yet another Vazquez meltdown. Mitre should be starting, not Vazquez.
Any chance we can put Vazquez on the DL for “depression” or somethin?

Middle of 6 in New York
Mitres showing Vazquez how to pitch as hes been shutting down Chicago…why isnt he the #4 starter?

Middle 2 in Philadelphia
Anyone else notice how much more relaxed Joe Buck sounds when he does a non-Yankee game? Its like there less pain since nop ones twisting his arm to announce his most hated team…

Bottom 7 in New York
Yankees took the lead….Yankees lost the lead. Why? Girardi went to the bullpens version of Vazquez: Robertson. Can someone tell me why Mitre couldnt go beyond 3 innings?

Bottom 4 in Philadelphia
Oh the Mets…gotta love ya. 2 dropped pop liners. Phillies lead 1-0.

Game Over in New York
Why did Mitre leave after 3 shutdown innings of work? The man did come up as a starter, so dont feed me any BS about being tired…instead he left and the mop up reliever comes in and blows our lead…Mitre better be hurt…

I need to end on a good note…
Bottom 7 in Philadelphia
8-0 Phillies over Mets?
Heh, allllllllright…

We get it Obama, youre a White Sox fan…or are you?

Jesus f’n Christ. Its like he still trying to prove to the world that he was born in America or something. The Yankees went to visit the white house the other day, a tradition of every championship team to have the required presidential visit. For some it was an unforgetable expierience…
…for Obama? Hes a little disappointed that they werent the Chicago White Sox.

For those who are uninformed, the President has gone out of his way sometimes to show how hes a fan of the White Sox. He wore their cap during his opening day 1st pitch in DC in which no Chicago team was present…more recently, he mentioned the White Sox as often as the Yankees during his speech about the 2009 Yankee championship. Hell, he even brought up 2005 as the last White Sox win as if he needed to remind himself that the Chisox werent always bad…

There were some Yankees he pointed out: Jeter, Posada, Girardi, Rivera and Tex
And there were some high profile snubs: ARod, Sabathia, Pettitte, Burnett, Cano, Damon and Matsui (They werent there, but STILL)

Obama’s got about 2 or 3 more chances to meet baseball champions, and there are some loooooooong odds that he “beloved” White Sox will do it.
Although I doubt hes serious…

LETS PLAY A GAME!

Put 30 seconds on the clock and grab a piece of paper.

Name as many White Sox players past/current as you can.

Ready? GO!

………..

……..
……………..
……..

TIME!

How’d you do?
Could you name at least 1? Cuz Obama can’t.

Seriously, Obama couldnt name a single White Sox player…not one…zero.

For a self proclaimed White Sox fan, Obama sure dropped the ball on that….wonder what else hes lying about.

This is gonna be a long one

So yeah, I kinda dropped off the face of the earth halfway through opening night, but…

I was gonna watch the entire game
but then I got high
I wouldve watched game 2 as well
but I got high
Now Im late for game 3, and I know why
(Why man?)
Because I got high, because I got high, because I got high!
La-da-da-da-da-da-da

No not really. But its a better excuse than what really happened, so sue me
(Please dont sue me. I have no money)

I actually did listen in for most of opening night (obviously from my last entry)
but more importantly I listened in last night, and that one was a big ol bag of crazy. And it also proved what while Yankees/Red Sox 20 times a year is great for TV, its murder on both teams during the season.

But the top of the 8th really stood out for 2 reasons: 1-because the Yankees took the lead and eventually win in that inning…and 2-with all the tweaks the two teams made during the offseason being represented, it was a microcasm in the “Yankees vs Red Sox 2010″ picture….allow me…

4/6/10, Yankees vs Red Sox, Top 8 in Boston
Posada leads off with a ground rule double. Go-ahead run on 2nd, 0 out. Not a bad start.
Swisher comes up to bunt, but cant get the job done and eventually grounds out to Short. Go-ahead run on 2nd, 1 out.
Brett Gardner then puts a single that barely drops into left in such a way, Posada cant advance. So the go-ahead run remains at 2nd despite the single.
Grandersons turn, and he too fails to move the runner over by flying out to left. This is 3 strait failures to move Posada from 2nd to at least 3rd. If Swish got the bunt down, Posada wouldve scored on either the single or the sac fly…but alas, Go-ahead run on 2nd, 2 out.
This is where Boston fans start crying…
Jeter comes up and hits a grounder to Scutaro that should end the inning, btu it doesnt, because Scutaro commits a throwing error.
Allow me to repeat: One of the key players involved in Bostons new “Pitching/Defence 1st” philosophy just commited an error at the worst possible time against the worst possible team-The Yankees, a team (if Im not mistaken) who make a habit of killing teams that give them a 4th out….so much for a better defense.
So now the bases are loaded, 2 outs, go-ahead run 90 feet away….and up steps Nick Johnson in all his hitless glory and he does what he does best: not swing the bat. He draws the big walk, and Posada, after 3 strait failed attempts and after a huge error, finally is allowed to trot home.
The Yankees take a 1 run lead and eventually trot out Mo…and win the game.

That struggle of an inning of a game is most likely the preview of the 2010 Yankees/Red Sox war….get ready for a lot of nail biters…

Opening day 2010

Here we go! No more waiting. No more listening to how people think the Rays can overcomes the east, Twins can overcome their closer shortage or how the Mets can overcome 3rd place. Time to put your money where your mouth is. Time for the Royals to start 6-1 and give everyone false hope again, time for Ortiz to inject those last minute steroids or for Manny to take his birth control this time. Time for me to be myself again and offend and argue with idiots/Yankee Haters only this time Ive got a bit of arrogance with me….but more importantly…

Time for the 2010 Defending World Champion New York Yankees to do their thing and bring home #28!

We’ve got 17 more than the next team down the line and we’re all geared up to up the ante again. Tonight we open up in Boston, where theyve been cursing our names more than anywhere else these last 4 months.

On the mound for the 2010 Defending World Champion Yankees is future AL Cy Yong winner C.C. Sabathia…facing him is the cannon fodder known as Josh Beckett.

Yankees have got 20HR potential from 1-8 in their lineup, while Boston might get 20HR combined from their 6-9 hitters. Is the division really up for grabs? I dont see the Yankees having any trouble winning the east this year. We’ve got 3 MVP canidates in our lineup, One of the best leadoff hitters in recent years batting 7th for us, THE best leadoff hitter batting 1st and the only power outage in our lineup instead will steal bases with the best of them.

Anyway, on fantasy watch tonight:
Derek Jeter (Pretenders)
Mark Teixeira (Pretenders)
Nick Johnson (F**king Lozers)
My other leagues dont start for another day

Lets get it ON!

Pregame in Boston
The most notorious cannon fodder againt the Yankees in the history of Boston, Pedro Martinez, has come out to throw out the 1st pitch….to washed up catcher Jason Varitek.
You may all remember him from last falls world series as the guy the Yankees beat to clinch.

Top 1 in Boston
Johnson hits one pretty deep…just shy of the wall though. Tryin to make an impact?

End of 1 in Boston
1-2-3…1-2-3…the most boring thing that a blogger can write about….though Pedroia looking stupid as he struck out on that high heat from CC was entertaining…

Top 2 in Boston
Jorgeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee Posaaaaaaaaaaadaaaaaaaaaaaaaa! 1st homer in baseball for 2010! 1-0 Yankees!
Welcome to the Yankees Curtis Granderson! back-to-back! 2-0 Yankees!

John Sterling had a chance to unveil his Granderson home run call….pray for the c hildren…here it is:
“Curtis, youre something Grand-erson!”
That sounds even worse than his Teix-message bit…

Top 4 in Boston
Gardner and Jeter, back to back RBI singles! 4-1 Yankees!
Jeters RBI single give me my 1st fantasy points of the year!

…Did I not say “cannon fodder” before in reference to Beckett?

5-1 Yankees on a double steal. Gardner steals home!

Top 5 in Boston
So Beckett cant even go 5 innings. Great start to our 2010!

Yeah….dont repair the elbow tear….WHAT COULD GO WRONG?

Joe Nathan feels that he doesnt need surgery to repair an elbow tear…good luck with that.
…wonder how the Twins feel about that logic…

Interesting, with all the injuries going around, people seem to finally be ignoring how Mo Rivera is older than dirt.

What o what is happening in baseball today?
Stephen Strasburg debuts for the Nats today, and if his hype is anything like Chapman, then he wont disappoint.

Sabathia is making his 2nd start today for the Yankees. I will attempt to watch the game on YES today and maybe make any peanut-gallary-inspired comments I feel. I doubt he’ll disappoint. Burnett and Vazquez did decent in their runs.

Meanwhile, in the war for #5…

Aceves: 6IP, 0H, 0BB, 0R, 4K
Mitre: 5IP, 2H, 1BB, 0R, 4K
Gaudin: 4IP, 4H, 1BB, 3R, 3K
Hughes: 2IP, 1H, 1BB, 1R, 0K
Chamberlain: 1.1IP, 3H, 3BB, 3R, 1K

Aceves and Mitre are out in front early while Joba falls way behind. Aceves is a long shot and is already a lock in the bullpen, so Mitre is looking good right now in my book.

Also…

Gardner: 1-12, 0R, 0HR, 1RBI, 1BB, 0SB
Thames: 1-9, 0R, 0HR, 0RBI, 0BB, 0SB
Winn: 1-7, 1R, 0HR, 0RBI, 0BB, 0SB

So still no standouts for the last outfield slot. its also worth noting though that Winn and Thames have both struck out 3 and 4 times respectively. So I’d say Gardner leads…by a lead so small that it cant be measured.

TOP 1
CC on the mound, 5 of 8 regular Yankees in the field with Winn in left and a couple AAAs.
Pirates facing us.
McCutchen just singled…followed by a double…

Man, if I’m a rookie fighting for a roster spot in spring training, I’d be psyched to face a pitcher with nothing to compete for like Sabathia. Theyre not entirely into it (just working on a certain pitch or two) and I hammer him and look good for my team.

3 run shot makes it 4-0 Pirates…btw…

BOTTOM 1
I noticed Girardi made the lineup today of Jeter leading off followed by Nick Johnson, with Granderson down in the order. Granderson not a top of the lineup guy.
Charlie Morton for Pittsburgh starting with a rotation spot on the line.

Morton will probably do better than CC for that reason. Hes got a job to win, CC doesnt. I could be wrong cuz most of this lineup is made of Yankee regulars…

…aaaaaaand Johnson has gone yard. 4-1 Pirates.

BOTTOM 3
So yeah….Johnson goes deep again. I like what I see with him this year.
5-3 Pirates.

BOTTOM 4
Johnsons day ends 2-2, 2HR…not too shabby….his pinchhitter comes in and ties the game w/ a double. Nice.
…and Jorge gives us a 7-6 lead with a 2 out RBI!

TOP 8
Ah, the game has now become a AAA game rather than a ST game.
Pirates retake the lead, btw…8-7
