Trades?

Even with Pettitte down, Hughes’ hiccups and Dr AJ Jekyll/Mr Hyde Burnett doing what he does, the Yankees still have the best rotation in baseball, so long as CC keeps winning, Vazquez hold on and Mitre proves to be a solid fill-in. Our lineup is always potent, so theres no real need to fill any non-existant holes. So as the trade deadline looms, our old friend, the bullpen, is what needs the most help.

Why?

Joba is shakey, and I dont trust him with a slim lead late…I cringe when Park takes the mound, Mitre is now a starter, Aceves is out with no sign of returning, Marte is out as well while Im afraid of seeing Robertson take the hill and Gaudin hasnt exactly been a beacon of light.
Theres Mo. But while the 9th inning is, as always, a no doubter-the 7th and 8th are pretty much up in the air, especially when October comes.

Our only decent AAA guy, Albaladejo, is currently on roster thanks to Pettittes injury so the only real option is to turn to the trade market and see whos offering…and unlike Seattle, we should look for people who are serious about trading with us.

-Toronto: Scott Downs, Kevin Gregg
So the Blue Jays hot start is only a memory and theyre tossin up the white flag on the season, content knowing at least 4th place isnt dead last…and theyre movin their bullpen.
Downs is another Marte apparently, but with Marte hurt, why the hell not.
Gregg is a guy with closer exp, but with Mo, he can translate that exp into an 8th inning situation, which contains just as much pressure because the 8th inning against the Yankees might as well be the 9th because you sure as hell aint beating Rivera.
So I hope the Yankees go for Gregg, because he wouldnt be any worse than what we already have…though dealing with the Blue Jays is always an infuriating ordeal (“We want ALL your prospects for our one pitcher”)

-Cleveland: Kerry Wood
I know, I know, this screams “Carl Pavano” what with his high price tag and extremely-prone-to-injury history. But, like Pavano, Wood can be lights out when healthy. Hes had a rough start in Cleveland, but hes been picking it up lately.
…Lets just save him for the July 31-better-than-nothing plan.

-Kansas City: Joakim Soria
I might as well entertain this idea…though I feel the Royals might be a tad bit mad to offer him up, and the price tag wouldnt be small. To be fair, he would be the best guy available and a no-brainer 8th inning and a Mo-needs-a-day-off-so-let-someone-else-close.

-Kyle Farnsworth
…just kidding. I like him, but he just cant cut it…

Spring Training WAR! Hugh! Good Its ENDING Ya’ll!

The end is near, folks. The battles are either over, of almost obvious at this point. Lets recap:

LEFT FIELD

The Winner: Brett Gardner
As the only person with an average over .200, Gardner made this choice very easy. His slow start this spring made it interesting since the other comeptitors were also slumping, but seeing how the other two never broke out of their slumps, Gardner took a stroll to victory. He may not have had any homers, but 2 triples arent bad either. His lone stolen base, having actual XBH and having more hits than the other 2 combined made this battle a no-brainer.

The losers?
Winn will probably serve as the #4 outfielder. His numbers failed to impress though, so if Gardner struggles this year, he wont lose his job (unlike last year when Melky took it from him)

As for Thames. I said at the beginning it was either win or die for him (die = AAA) but since Jamie Hoffman is history, Thames is safe in the big leagues, as the 25th man on the roster.

yawn.

I also said at the beginning that Gardner might have a shot at pushing Grandersopn into left and taking center for himself. That might happen and Girardi will answer that by friday….odds are that prolly wont happen, but you never know.

STARTER #5

The Winner: ??? (answer friday)

Still Contending: Phil Hughes, Sergio Mitre, Alfredo Aceves
Aceves is still a long shot, especially after his recent beatings, while Hughes’ recent crappiness via the long ball is being played off as “wind-aided”…Mitre is looking good and if you dont believe me.
I still think Mitre deserves the win here. All you really need in a #5 starter is consistency, and Mitre has been the only contender to show that. Whatever happens though, whoever wins will not keep the job all year since I imagine theyll have a very short leash.

The losers?
Joba sucks as a starter. I think the majority can agree on that idea. I’d rather see him pitch five 8th inning stints in a week than see him pitch 5 innings a start.
….and Gaudin might not even stay in NY, and Im not talking about AAA either. Hes on waivers, and will either be traded or released.

I have a feeling someone will be sent to AAA, and Ive got an unfair feeling itll be Mitre…

Fantasy Draft #3…plus assinine suggestions

Fantasy baseball is like a drug. You cant make just one team.

Ive got multiple teams in the works this year. 1 in a money league, 1 for kicks, 1 to test a theory I have, and 1 that I created with some friends to test another theory.

This week I’m drafting my solo theory team, named “The Roid Sox” This is very simple, Im gonna draft power hitters and hope they homer me to victory. If theres a power hitter on the maket better than any of my existing power hitters, Ill aquire him….also if you use steroids, then theres a place for you on my team (Good news for David Ortiz)

…and my draft position is 11. So there goes Pujols, Tex, Fielder, ARod and Howard right from the getko. Eh, the bright side is Ive got a near end position, 11/12 meaning when I draft, I get 2 of the following 4 picks…plus Ill have more time to elaborate on my selections. Remember: home runs only, RBIs a plus, SBs dont mean sh!t here.

…and as I wait for the hour to pass…

Aceves pitched today, got the start even, and got shelled off his #1 position in the search of this years #5…Hughes becomes the new frontrunner. A nice 2.08 while Aceves falls down with Mitre as they jockey to keep up. Gaudin and Joba so far back in obscurity I wonder if theyre even in this race anymore.

Meanwhile Gardners average is a nice plump .281, putting him sadly way out in front in the OF race. Thames however is fighting to not get sent to AAA, and with an average barely over .100, it dont look too good.

……and yeah, theres also basketball going on apparently…I dont follow it much,  usually hope for Syracuse to lose and Kentucky to win. Why Kentucky? Here are the years when the Kentucky Wildcats won the NCAA tourney: 1948, 1949, 1951, 1958, 1978, 1996, 1998
Notice something similar?

Good lord, what else can I do to kill time…
oh yeah…

THIS was published. More or less highlighting changes needed to baseball.

I agree with the playoff off day shenanigans. Too many off days is annoying. Back in my day 1998, playoffs went 1-2-off-3-4-off-5 in the LDS, and 1-2-off-3-4-5-off-6-7 in the LCS/WS.
That Yankee/Angel ALCS last year? 1-2-off-3-4-off-rain-5-off-6 Thank God that the Yankees won game 6 or there wouldve been another off day thrown in there before game 7. I could care less about FOXs potential ratings. I cared more about how John Lackey was getting enough rest where he prolly wouldve pitched game 7.

Oh, and expanding the LDS to a best of 7? God no. Baseball should not be played in November. At this current rate, we’re gonna have to change the “Fall classic” to the “Late fall-early winter classic”

All Star game to stop determining home field advantage? Im sure every NL owner, fan and player would agree with that. It should go to the team with the better record. Period.

Division realignment? Pssssssssssssh. Ill touch on that in another post as to why thats a pretty dumb idea.

Shortening games? I really never had much to say for or against this. Pitchers who work fast (but not too fast) usually do well, while if someones getting rattled-it always helps to give him half a minute or so to collect himself mentally, usually with the help of the catcher/manager….but dont strictly enfore the push to quicken games…DONT fine a pitcher for “going too slow” and DONT get your panties in a knot when a game takes over 3 hours to complete.

I’d take a 4 hour victory over a 2 hour defeat any day.

…Im out of ideas. I’ll just sit quietly for this draft to begin…

…Wow, half the league is actually here this time…

First couple picks, M. Cabrera and Justin Morneau.
Aramis Ramirez and Adam Lind follow suit…

Draft over. You’d be suprised at how many people wanted Zobrist so bad…

anyway…projected lineup…

The Roid Sox:
C: M. Napoli
1B: M. Cabrera
2B: B. Phillips
3B: C. Davis
SS: C. Barmes
OF: C. Quentin
OF: N. Swisher
OF: A. Lind
U: J. Morneau
P: San Francisco Giants

Spring Training MADNESS!!!

So Phil Hughes pitches 4 innings for the Yankees today and picks up a save, not that theres a closer job to win…Hughes is now right up there with Aceves and Mitre for the #5 slot. Gaudin seems to have fallen into an anonymous position while Jobas struggles have put him in a long shot position. Heres some stat leaders to ponder over:

Innings:                         ERA:
Aceves (10)                   Aceves (0.90)
Mitre (9)                        Hughes (2.08)
Hughes (8.2)                  Mitre (3.00)

Ks:                               BB:
Mitre (7)                        Aceves (0)
Aceves (5)                     3 tied (2)
Gaudin/Hughes (4)         Chamberlain (6)

Hits Allowed
Aceves (3)
Mitre (7)
Hughes (7)

Meanwhile, the final outfield slot is wide open as all three entries have failed to stand out.

H-AB:                            R:
Gardner (4-22)                Garnder (4)
Winn (2-15)                    Winn (2)
Thames (2-18)                Thames (0)

BB:                               SO:
Gardner (4)                    Gardner (2)
Winn (1)                        Winn (4)
Thames (0)                    Thames (6)

OBP:
Gardner (.308)
Winn (.188)
Thames (.158)

More or less, it seems like a strait up 1-2-3 with Gardner leading the way followed by Winn, with Thames bringing up the rear. It looks like Thames is going down to AAA to start the year with Winn riding shotgun. To be fair though, Gardner has had more opprotunities, but Thames and Winn have had the same tries and Winn  has the edge over Thames, so the fate of Marcus seems all but sealed.

So, slowly yet surely, the 2010 Defending World Champion Yankees are figuring out the final specifics to the roster.

Yeah….dont repair the elbow tear….WHAT COULD GO WRONG?

Joe Nathan feels that he doesnt need surgery to repair an elbow tear…good luck with that.
…wonder how the Twins feel about that logic…

Interesting, with all the injuries going around, people seem to finally be ignoring how Mo Rivera is older than dirt.

What o what is happening in baseball today?
Stephen Strasburg debuts for the Nats today, and if his hype is anything like Chapman, then he wont disappoint.

Sabathia is making his 2nd start today for the Yankees. I will attempt to watch the game on YES today and maybe make any peanut-gallary-inspired comments I feel. I doubt he’ll disappoint. Burnett and Vazquez did decent in their runs.

Meanwhile, in the war for #5…

Aceves: 6IP, 0H, 0BB, 0R, 4K
Mitre: 5IP, 2H, 1BB, 0R, 4K
Gaudin: 4IP, 4H, 1BB, 3R, 3K
Hughes: 2IP, 1H, 1BB, 1R, 0K
Chamberlain: 1.1IP, 3H, 3BB, 3R, 1K

Aceves and Mitre are out in front early while Joba falls way behind. Aceves is a long shot and is already a lock in the bullpen, so Mitre is looking good right now in my book.

Also…

Gardner: 1-12, 0R, 0HR, 1RBI, 1BB, 0SB
Thames: 1-9, 0R, 0HR, 0RBI, 0BB, 0SB
Winn: 1-7, 1R, 0HR, 0RBI, 0BB, 0SB

So still no standouts for the last outfield slot. its also worth noting though that Winn and Thames have both struck out 3 and 4 times respectively. So I’d say Gardner leads…by a lead so small that it cant be measured.

TOP 1
CC on the mound, 5 of 8 regular Yankees in the field with Winn in left and a couple AAAs.
Pirates facing us.
McCutchen just singled…followed by a double…

Man, if I’m a rookie fighting for a roster spot in spring training, I’d be psyched to face a pitcher with nothing to compete for like Sabathia. Theyre not entirely into it (just working on a certain pitch or two) and I hammer him and look good for my team.

3 run shot makes it 4-0 Pirates…btw…

BOTTOM 1
I noticed Girardi made the lineup today of Jeter leading off followed by Nick Johnson, with Granderson down in the order. Granderson not a top of the lineup guy.
Charlie Morton for Pittsburgh starting with a rotation spot on the line.

Morton will probably do better than CC for that reason. Hes got a job to win, CC doesnt. I could be wrong cuz most of this lineup is made of Yankee regulars…

…aaaaaaand Johnson has gone yard. 4-1 Pirates.

BOTTOM 3
So yeah….Johnson goes deep again. I like what I see with him this year.
5-3 Pirates.

BOTTOM 4
Johnsons day ends 2-2, 2HR…not too shabby….his pinchhitter comes in and ties the game w/ a double. Nice.
…and Jorge gives us a 7-6 lead with a 2 out RBI!

TOP 8
Ah, the game has now become a AAA game rather than a ST game.
Pirates retake the lead, btw…8-7

Spring Training WAR! Hugh! Update Ya’ll!

Sooooooooooooo…in the battle for the #5 slot, both of the favorites took the mound for the Yankees today, and neither did a whole lot of impressing. Both Joba and Hughes tossed 33 pitches each converting only 14 and 18 of them for strikes respectively.
Between the 2 of them, Hughes looked better, only surrendering a walk and a lone homer.
Joba allowed 3 walks, 5 runs and 3 hits including back-to-back triples. Oh, and less than half of his pitches were for strikes.

Now in both of their defenses…its their 1st spring training appearences. World Series caliber pitching is not expected.

But all things consitered, Hughes has a leg up on Chamberlain out of the gate…but Aceves, Gaudin and Mitre all pitched 2 innings each and allowed 0 runs.

But its early…

MEANWHILE!

Winn, Gardner and Thames fight for the last outfield spot, and none of them have been standing out thus far. They all combine for a .000 average. The only one to even reach base was Thames when he was plunked. So early on in this fight, its anyones guess.

So yeah…we’re 1-2 in ST so far.
Gotta start preparing for my fantast draft too…

Spring Training WAR! Hugh! Good GOD Ya’ll!

Its official (according to MLB.com anyway) the position war is on!

For the 2010 defending world champion Yankees, there lie 2 questions: Who is in left? and who is our #5?

LEFT FIELD
Last year: It was all Damon’s territory. But hes donned an old english D for the interlocking NY.
The contenders: Brett Gardner (fav), Marcus Thames, Randy Winn.

-Gardner enters this fight as not only the favorite, but also as the only one with a ring from last year.
strength: Fast…like, really fast. Like, you can catch him on a pitch out and he’ll still steal 2nd. Also defense. He’ll play you shallow and still track down a fly ball on the track.
weakness: No power. The only homer hes hitting is an inside the park one…but hes already got one of those on his resume…

-Randy Winn may not be as fast as he used to be, so good thing he isnt a 1-trick pony.
strength: Switch hitter. So unlike a certain unnamed person on this team, Winn can hit lefties.
weakness: No power. Never was much of a power threat…then again, hes in Yankee Statium now.

-Thames has some former Yankee days to call upon is his 2nd go around. A non-roster invitee means he the heavy underdog in this battle. 50:1 odds…
strength: Compared to the other two, hes got home run power.
weakness: No security. Unlike the other two, where the bench is always an option, Thames is starter or die. He needs to really impress if he wants to stay in the big leagues.

-Projected winner?
Brett Gardner. The Yankees have enough raw power in their lineup, so Thames’ only edge goes out the window. Gardners speed fills a huge void left behind by Damon. Look for Gardner to be so impressive, he might win center field and push Granderson over to left.

STARTER #5
Last year: It was a freakin merry-go-round for the Yankees. With 1-4 set in stone, anyone and everyone who was apart of the beforementioned merry-go-round are lookin to win that 5 slot and avoid either the bullpen of AAA.
The contenders: Joba Chamberlain (co-fav), Phil Hughes (co-fav), Chad Gaudin, Sergio Mitre, Alfredo Aceves.

The clear favorites in the battle are Joba and Hughes. The fact that the other three are showing up for this is like Mexico showing up for the winter olympics: hopeless.

-Joba has been released from his imfamous “Joba Rules” restriction, which should unleash some fury on oppeonents this year.
strength: No rules. No mercy.
weakness: Waaaaaaaay more dominant from the bullpen.

-Phil Hughes wasnt too shabby when he was a spot starter last year, and he was unstoppable from the pen.
strength: rotation or bullpen, either way you win.
weakness: that flexability may become a liability against Joba.

-I said it before and Ill say it again. A big reason why our trio of starters were so dominationg during the 09 playoffs, was because they were able to rest and prepare all during September. And while they were resting, Gaudin and Mitre were kicking @S$ and winning.
Mitre
strength: When hes on, hes ON!
weakness: when hes cold, hes freezing. Potential for injury always present.
Gaudin
strength: He pitched well in some big games for us down the stretch last year.
weakness: He lacks longevity in his starts. 5 inning pitchers dont look to promising in this fight.

-…and then theres Aceves. He did great out of the pen last year. Why change that? He can always find a good time to spot-start. Anyone remember Ramiro Mendoza? Great long reliever who occasionally started a game. Thats a nice role for Aceves.
strength: Great pitcher who has some clutch stuff….but as a starter?
weakness: Too many guys ahead of him in line. Too mant guys need to flop for him to take over #5. Stick to relief.

-Projected winner?
Phil Hughes. Jobas downfall in my mind is that hes just TOO good out of the pen. Hughes has similar stuff nomatter if its the 1st or 7th. Joba on the other hand can hit 100 pitching out of the pen. Thats scarier to face.

…so those are the 2 major battles projected for spring training 2010…Ill be keeping tabs on both as the games roll on.

(fantasy draft: March 21 someone remind me when the time draws near)

Chan Ho Park

…So someone told the Yankees that we need another arm in the pen since we dropped multiple guys from the beformentioned bullpen this winter, so this is where Chan Ho Park comes in. I couldnt really be bothered to find a good image of him, so I went with his card image from MLB Showdown

Park.jpg
…The funny thing about all this was apaprently he was torn between choosing either NY or the Cubs…then someone probably informed him that the Cubs have been a shining example of failure for over a century (and that they blame a goat for thier issues) while the Yankees have been the exact opposite.

…plus he mustve realized that the Yankees have 4 pitchers who could easily pitch over 200 innings this year, which means he could get paid for sitting on his *** most of the year and STILL win the world series.

All kidding aside, Park makes a solid addition to the Defending World Champion Yankees bullpen cuz after Jobahughes and Robertson, theres really nothing to bridge to Mo (Yeah, weve still got Marte, but hes generally useless against any AL team)

Plus, as shown above, he has a history of being a starter under his belt, so if Hughes is hurt, Joba is useless, Gaudin flops and Mitre gets chased back to AAA, we still have Park, which makes for a great Plan E…or not…

Need more convincing? He pitched against us in the world series last year, and didnt do half bad overall in the playoffs. Nice.

….and why did Showdown cards end? They were awesome!

2010

Everyone have a good christmas? Kwanza? New Years? Alrighty then…

Yankees at Fenway to begin, and end the season?
Phillies and their new ace go to Toronto?
Manny returning to Boston?
Yankees at Dodgers?
This season will have no shortage of great games to watch.

…but since at the end of the day all I care about it what the Yanks are doing, lets take a closer look at what the future holds…and some lingering questions…

Yankees vs Red Sox: opening day/end of the season.
We got spanked by the BoSox early last year right before we turned around and gave it right back to them just as hard, and took the division right in front of them…
It seems the most likely scenerio will be CC vs Beckett, then AJ vs Lackey, then Pettitte vs whatever overrated bum they have next. Either team could win any of those games and Id be an idiot to guess who would before pitchers/catchers have even reported, but there will be no sweeps…unlike last year where almost every set was a sweep.

Yankees at Dodgers
This was the dream world series matchup last postseason, even more so than the Angels vs Dodgers possibility.
Joe Torre vs Joe Girardi, Matt Kemp vs Curtis Granderson, Mark Texeira vs Andre Ethier, Derek Jeter vs Manny Ramirez, C.C. Sabathis vs…uh…can any Dodger compete with any Yankee pitcher?
Point is, this would be a great matchup of managers…not so much teams. Dodgers didnt do much this offseason, and if I didnt think they stood a chance against the Yankees then, then they definatly dont stand a chance against the Yankees now…

Left Field?
Damons still up in the air, and right before he signed with the Cubs, I was telling my dad about how good Marlon Byrn might be for us. The list of available fixes is growing short…
Heres a short list of people I nominate(d) to play left for NY in 2010, in order of ranking…

Damon
Holliday
DeRosa
Byrd
Dye
Bay
Cabrera
Gardner
Guererro
Hoffman

#5 Starter?
CC-AJ-Pettitte-Vazquez-???
It seems to be between Joba and Hughes…but never count out Gaudin or even Mitre.

…any hey, with C.M.Wang gone, the Yankees have a vancancy at the position of “Once a great pitcher but got hurt too much” that Ben Sheets could fill.

Remember this guy too?

Apparently the Yankees are going on a reunion tour next year as theyve been bringing back former Yankees in Nick Johnson and now Javy Vazquez.

I found this out when I was checking my yahoo mail and I saw the headline. My reaction: “No.” because I knew we had to give up something for Javy….
I saw the neighboring picture and noticed it was a Yankee hitter. My reaction: “NO!” because apparently Cashman just gave away another regular from our lineup.
I read that we just shipped Melky out in the deal. My reaction: “Nooooooooo!”

Remember when Santana was up for trade and the Yankees REFUSED to trade our prospects to get him. Among them were Ian Kennedy and Melky himself. 2 winters later we’ve traded both away. We’ve also now traded away most of our outfield.

Heres a short list of what we’ve lost this winter:
-A pitching prospect
-Our starting CF from the world series
-World series MVP
-Our Leftfielder
-A highly coveted OF prospect
-A valuble cog from our bullpen machine

For those unfamiliar with Javier Vazquez, he pitched for us in 2004, making the all star game before having a miserable 2nd half. He was also one of those “heros” during the ALCS game 7. We got rid of him for Randy Johnson, which wasnt so hot a pick up either.

Javy V had a great year last year with the Braves though, but that was in the National League. At least now he gives us an easy pick for #4 starter and leaves either Joba or Hughes to pitch in the pen (maybe both depending on Gaudin and Mitre)

Alas, farewell to Melky Cabrera as he joins the fast growing list of former 09 Yankees…

Melky.jpg

…shame the last we see of him is him pulling a hammy in the series…

($5 says the next former Yankee we bring back will be either Soriano or Boone)
