Week 24 in review: Standby for mayday

A 3-3 week aint something to write home about, but the Yankees’ll take it, especially if it keeps them in 1st, These backs-against-the-wall comebacks need to stop, cuz theyre doing damage to my heart.

BTW: A-Rods homerun against Baltimore was 100% legit. Check the replays and even Joe Buck will admit that even though it was close, it was clearly too far inside to be a strike. Cry me a river, it was ball 2.

…oh, and Andy Pettittes back, and looking as sharp as ever.

Theyre on a winning streak and look good to pull of an upset this week. As long as Tulowitzki keeps doin his thing. Its playoffs time!

Roid Sox: (13-11) division winner. 2 seed in playoffs.

-Playoff time!

This Week:
Final homestand…and its vs the Rays and Red Sox.
Sure would be a bad time to choke…

Week 23 in review: Not as advertised

Yeah yeah yeah…Yankees and Rangers was billed as a playoff preview, but the Yankees didnt treat it as such. If this were the playoffs, the Yanks wouldntve sent out that trio of poor pitchers and nobodies. That series featured no Sabathia, no Pettitte and only a bullpen appearence (0 runs allowed) of Hughes.

So let the Rangers celebrate, the Yankees will be a wet towel on their parade come October.

Not much to say as it was the lone Yankee win last week. Much thanks to Swisher for winning this for us in walk off fashion.

Favorite Picture:

Yeah. This was handed out in Milwaukee. Brewers suck. Cubs suck. Its all fun.

Fantasy:
The F*cking Lozers f*cking lost. I guess it was their destiny or something. Didnt help that the other guy had Joey Votto or that Juan Pierre and Brett Gardner decided to stop stealing bases.

Anyway…

F*cking Lozers: Final week. 3rd place battle.

Showdown: (8-15) 5th in division.

-Eliminated for division, Currently holding the 3 seed for playoffs in final week of regular season

Roid Sox: (13-10) 1st in division. 1 game up on 2nd.

This Week:
Rays and Orioles…and Andy Pettittes comming back.
-a win gets me in the playoffs. A loss wont kill me, but then Id need a lot of help.

Week 22 in review: Good-bye, Boston

How far back are they? 10 games? Can they really win 10 more games than the Yankees this month? No, no they cant. But once again they face the Rays in a series, meaning either they win and climb closer in the standings, or the Rays win and continue to breathe down out encks so Im not sure who to root for.

cpDOOM! 2.0: (14-8) 2nd in division. 3 games back of 1st, 2 games up on 3rd.
-Eliminated for division, Currently holding the 3 seed for playoffs, very close to clinching.

Roid Sox: (12-10) t-1st in division. 1 game up on 3rd.
-Currently in playoff picture, but need to win this week to keep in there.

F*cking Lozers:
Semi-finals: (2) F*cking Lozers vs the 6 seed.
I’m hoping to ride the hot streaks of Marcus Thames and Wandy Rodriguez and hoping Tim Lincecums last start is the sign that hes finally returning to his former glory.
The other guy pulled off a 8-5 upset over the 3 seed and has an equally impressive lineup that includes Joey Votto and Sabathia.
The only lock of a statistic is stolen bases in my favor what with Juan Pierre, Michael Bourn and Brett Gardner patroling my outfield.
Will I finally advance to the finals this year, or will it be 3 strait years of semi-failure?

Next Week:
Baltimore and Texas. Theres no reason for us to not be in 1st after playing these two…

Initiate the countdown!

Well look at what month it is! Time to start thinking of magic numbers and playoff scenarios! Lets take a look at who is mathmaticly left in each division race…

AL bEAST
New York Yankees
Tampa Bay Rays (1.5 out)
Boston Red Sox (8.5 out)
Toronto Blue Jays (15 out)

Currently, Torontos elimination number (13) is smaller than their games back (15) and unless the east bacomes the AL Central, then the Jays are out of the playoffs. The Yankees currently hold onto the small lead after setting a record with the Rays for longest time tied for 1st, so those 2 are expected to come away with the east and wild card, leaving Boston in a hopless situation. But where the BoSox fall short in talent and brains, they more than make up for in desire, so they wont go anywhere. Dont expect that season finale against the Yankees to mean anything though except for a chance to play spoilers.
Meanwhile, the Orioles can take solace in the fact that thanks to Buck Showalter, they are no longer anywhere near the Mets all time single season loss record.

AL CENTRAL
Minnesota Twins
Chicago White Sox (4 out)
Detroit Tigers (12 out)
Kansas city Royals (21 out)
Cleveland Indians (24 out)

It seems that a 1 game playoff is expected out of this division this year thanks to the last few years. Will it feature a rematch of 2008 (CWS vs MIN), or of 2009 (MIN vs DET) or a new matchup (CWS vs DET). $5 says Detroit would win that game, if only to give this all a rock/paper/scissors vibe to it.
Realistically speaking, the tigers are a mile behind, the White Sox are recharged thanks to Manny (not his bat, just Manny being there). Is it Minnesotas turn to choke with the lead this year? anything is possible with this division!
Elsewhere, the Royals can sure get used to this whole “not finishing last” thing. Remember Royals fans: once upon a time the Devil Rays were thanking God that they finished as high as 4th, then they found out how to win and won the division eventually.

AL WEST
Texas Rangers
Oakland Athletics (10 out)
California Los Angeles Anaheim Angels of Anaheim (10.5 out)
Seattle Mariners (23 out)

Yeah…Texas is winning this time. If youre in a division where the 2nd place team is under .500, how can you NOT win?

AL WILD CARD
Tampa Bay Rays
Boston Red Sox (7 out)
Chicago White Sox (9 out)
Toronto Blue Jays (13 out)
Detroit Tigers/Oakland A’s (17 out)
California Los Angeles Anaheim Angels of Anaheim (17.5 out)
Kansas City Royals (26 out)
Cleveland Indians (29 out)

Lets rename the AL WC into the AL East+White Sox cuz thats all it really is. Hell, all non east teams are there to show just how dominating the division is cuz all those teams are closer to their own division leader then they are to the 2nd place team in the east. Heck, the 3rd place east team (Boston) would be tied with the Rangers for the west!

NL EAST
Atlanta Braves
Philadelphia Phillies (3 out)
Florida Marlins (10.5 out)
New York Mets (13 out)
Washington Nationals (21.5 out)

Man, the Phillies sure long for the days when all they had to do was catch the Mets in this division. Now they have to topple a legit team in order to steal away this division. Such is the life…
Also, if the Braves win the division this year. Expect Chipper Jones next year to announce that he’ll retire at the end of the year so that the team might get inspired to win like they did this year for Cox.

NL CENTRAL
Cincinnati Reds
St. Louis Cardinals (8 out)
Houston Astros/Milwaukee Brewers (16 out)
Chicago Cubs (21.5 out)

“Where the f*ck did these guys come from?” is probably what every Cardinals player and fan has been saying under their breath for the last few months. Reds have been doing great before Chapman came up, so imagine how good theyll do now. Seriously, imagine 2007 Yankees when Joba first came in throwing pure fire. yeah, division champs!

NL WEST
San Diego Padres
San Francisco Giants (3 out)
Colorado Rockies (7 out)
Los Angeles Dodgers (9 out)
Arizona Diamondbacks (22 out)

Padres are just thankful they they had such a big lead. This insane losing streak of theirs cost them a lot, but so far theyre still #1 in the west. Its given the rest of the division hope though.

NL WILD CARD
Philadelphia Phillies
San Francisco Giants (1.5 back)
St. Louis Cardinals (5 out)
Colorado Rockies (5.5 out)
Florida Marlins/LA Dodgers (7.5 out)
New York Mets (10 out)
Hoston Astros/Milwaukee Brewers (13 out)
Chicago Cubs/DC Nationals (18.5 out)
Arizona Diamondbacks (20.5 out)

See what happens when there isnt an AL east type division? This could go to anyone. 6 teams within 10 games. Hell, theres 4 teams within 6 games compared to the 0 teams within 6 games in the AL WC.

Deadline Fallout

[Previously on The Yankee Hater Hater…]

“Kerry Wood…Lets just save him for the July 31-better-than-nothing plan”

Well you dont have to, but you can call me psychic if you want. On deadline day, the Yankees had made a couple deals to deepen the bench, but our naked bullpen still looked no different, so I guess Cashman decided to pull the trigger on the better-than-nothing-plan and aquired Kerry Wood from the Cleveland Indians.
This is a good thing, seeing how having a man with closing exp can not only give everyone a valid reason to ignore Joba in the 8th for a while…but it now spells the end of Chan Ho Park and his enormous ERA. he Yankee bullpen overall just got a whole lot better thanks to just one trade.

A couple other deals went down for the deadline. Yankees also added Austin Kerns from the beforementioned Indians, and also raided Lance Berkman from the floundering Astros. Berkman gives us a real DH while Austin Kerns gives us a bat on the bench that didnt start the year in the minors.

Thanks to those trades, I can happily say:
Remember Nick Johnson and Randy Winn? Yeah, neither do I.

Elsewhere: Boston did NOTHING while the Rays did almost nothing.

Week 10 in review: Back where we belong

So yeah, when you face two of the worst teams in baseball back to back, anything less than at least 5 wins would be embaressing. Yankees beat up the Orioles (Again) then sweep the Astros. And while the US is celebrating a tie against England in Africa, thats exactly what the Yankees and Rays are in for 1st place in the division.

Meanwhile, the Red Sox took advantage of a lifeless Philies offense and the Blue Jays might be re-entering earth as their record creeps more and more down to the .500 level.

Business as usual, so not much to really talk about, unless youre into a young phenom, but I already covered that…

Biggest Yankee Game
6/12/10: Yankees-9, Astros-3
Again, not much worth noting, except that Vazquez is, as always, right at home against NL teams.

A Cubs player hoisting up a championship? Really?

Fantasy
I was lucky and smart enough to draft a certin Nationals pitcher named Strasburg during my Pretenders draft. Now my league is on notice and Im about to start killing opponents.

This Week
“World Series Rematch: Part 1”
2009 rematch: vs Phillies
2000 rematch: vs Mets

Week 9 in review: Upon reviewing the replay from the “week 8 review” the ruling on the field still stands: Cleveland still sucks

So, thanks to the 28 out perfect game, people are now back harping on the whole replay issue, and Selig is apparently turning back to his powerless and completely pointless “special” committee (and I do mean special) to answer the eternal question that is baseballs pandoras box: how much more do we need to extend instant replay.

Ya know what? Lets stop BSing around and just do it. Make a 5th umpire that sits in a booth the whole game with the announcers for the home team. Theyll have access to the instand replays from the TV feed and they can instantly see the play from every needed angle and make a reversal in under 30 seconds. 30 seconds, because the manager isnt gonna argue with an umpire that isnt there, or maybe 3 umpires, that way theres no bias.

Biggest Yankee Game
6/6/10: Yankees-4, Blue Jays-3
We were about the be swept by the Toronto Blue Jays and our only ray of light was Javy Vazquez…no one would fault you for thinking “awe f*ck, here we go again”
But NO! Javy Vazquez allowed only 1 hit in 7 innings for the win…Ill repeat that.
Javy Vazquez pitched a gem against an American League team. That doesnt happen.

…Then again, Toronto isnt exactly American, so maybe Javy found a loophole in the “You suck against the American League” curse.

Favorite Picture

ballboy.pngFor those unaware, a Toronto ballboy unwittingly fielded a fair ball and threw it into the fans. an umpire and the Blue Jays mascot then proceeded to mess with the kid over it, the umpire taking away his glove and giving it to a nearby officer, while the mascot broke out the caution tape.

Fantasy
Nothing worth mentioning aside from the F*cking Lozers are again all alone in 1st place, while a certain Phenom named Strasburg is debuting for the Nationals this week, which is definatly gonna help my Pretenders team.

This Week
Yankees head to Baltimore to whip some Orioles then head home to kick off interleague play against the Astros.

Lima Time comes to an end

One of my favorite acts to watch once upon a time, Jose Lima has died of a heart attack in his LA home.

The man enjoyed a hit and miss career, highlighted by a 21-10 3.51 season in 1999 with the Astros (4th in Cy Young voting) and a 5 hit shutout for the Dodgers in game 3 of the 2004 NLDS against the Cardinals.

Lima compiled 89 wins in his 13 year career with 980 strikeouts

Week 4 in review: God hates the Indians

Yankees are back on track, taking 2 of 3 from both the Orioles and White Sox. The Red Sox meanwhile just got swept by the Os and while the Rays are still on top, its only a matter of time before the Yankees take whats theirs. Besides, the standing dont truely start to matter until June anyway…

Now that April is officially in the rearview, its time to address players slumps. No more spring rust. If you’re sucking now, theres no excuse.

Nick Johnson, Javy Vazquez? Spotlights on you two. Randy winn as well, but as a bench player its not as vital.

With Marcus Thames hitting well and Brett Gardner not needing anyone to face lefties instead of him, Johnsons opprotunities are starting to dry up. Gardner and Nick Swisher both could prove excellent replacments in the #2 spot in the lineup.
Johnsons struggles could easity be explained by an apparent injury he was suffering, plus he knocked in a couple hits and RBIs in yesterdays thrashing of the White Sox, so maybe hes on the upward climb.

Vazquez though?
There is no explanation in existence to show why he suck all of a sudden except one. Its the same explanation as to why Roy Halladay is making the NL his b*tch.
The National League blows. If you were a dominating pitcher in the NL, you’ll only be a mear human in the AL.
Vazquez was borderline great in the NL, which transitions into borderline crap here in the AL. He has yet to have a good start this year and theres nothing physically wrong with him, so whats his issue? Its Girardis call as to how soon Vazquez will get the hook, unless he rights himself by mid May, theres no reason to keep him in the rotation. Sergio Mitre should be the #4 starter. As it is we only use him in long relief for when Vazquez self detonates. Thanks to him we actually stood a chance the last time Vazquez pitched.

Biggest Yankee Game
4/29/10 Yankees-4, Orioles-0
AJ Burnett took no prisoners in 8 shutout innings and Cano continues his domination over Baltimore by launching 2 homers. Hill and Pedroia can eat their hearts out, Robinson Cano is by far the best 2nd baseman in the division, if not the entire league.

Favorite Picture

indians.jpgActually, Indians fans, yes we can hate you that much. Especially if you hate yourselves most of the time.
Recently the top 10 most hated teams in the MLB came out. The Yankees (always a fan favorite to hate) placed only 5th. Turns out theres more overall hate for the Astros and Reds. The Red Sox placed 2nd, which Ive yet to stop laughing over…
But there is no more hated team than the Cleveland Indians….my brother in law is a fan of them, which makes me happy as well.
And I can only assume the picture is related to the 2007 ALDS. Big whoop, you lost in the ALCS…classy…
God himself would hate the Indians if you asked him…

Fantasy
After trailing 10-0 for most of last week, my F*cking Lozers team pulled a massive turnaround and won 7-4 and are now 1.5 games out of 1st. Injuries have been kicking my *** still but Ive been making some nice pick ups as a result, including the streaking Alex Gonzalez, and CJ Wilson.

The Pretenders are holding steady, under 10 points of 1st. Marlon Byrd has been an indredible pickup there. Now that its May I can start Teixeira without worry. It doesnt hurt to have Halladay or Santana either…

cpDOOM 2.0 (3-1) won a close one against a former perfect team and are now tied for 1st. This week they face the other team involved in the current 3 way tie. With the Rockies Catcher situation all figured out, I can now start Olivo without worry.

The Showdown (1-3) got beat again, as all of us owners are trying to figure out how to fix it. It seems the more owners there are, the more indecision there is. We voted and we’re actually gonna try starting David Ortiz, which I think is a bad idea, but we’ve got no better options right now. ARods little slump doesnt help things either, but he always does great after Girardi benches him for a game.

The Roid Sox (3-1) just competed some utter domination last week, and are all set to face another weak team this week. My “all power” lineup seems to have hit a snag seeing as how Clint Barmes sucks and theres no such thing as a power hitter on the waiver wire. Eric Young Jr is on a streak right now, so I picked him up for the time being, despite how wierd his 0 home runs looks in my lineup of 2-6 home run hitters…

This week
Yankees play the Orioles again this week, with Sabathia and Burnett looking to give encore performances, while Pettitte will face them for the first time since his near perfect game last year. Afterwards, we’ll face the dying Red Sox…with Vazquez pitching in the 1st game…

Bring on the crap!

So the Astros-Cubs game is on right now. I took a chance to see how “bad” Soriano apparently has become…and he made a pretty good catch.

Watching this kind of game can be fun for 2 reasons: 1-Theres no pressure since Im not rooting for either team…2-As my dad always told me “Its always exciting when two crappy teams play each other”

Bottom 5 in Chicago
2 on-1 out and Silva tries to bunt the runners over….and a double play occurs. Damn. Too hard of a bunt is the cause of the force out at 3rd, which may be forgiven, but when Silva cried foul when Humberto Quintero kinda-sorta brushed him aside when he sprang up from behind the plate to field the bunt/direct the throw, he wasnt running to first base (instead assuming his protest would cause the umpire to do something about it) as was easily thrown out at 1st. Inning over. Just another day in the lives of the Chicago Cubs.

Bottom 6 in Chicago
Now, the Astros arent in a shortage of crappy moments. Michael Bourn fell down while making a catch in centerfield…at least he held on to the damn ball…hes also 0-3 at the plate today, which is killing me since hes on one of my fantasy teams…

Yankees are playing tonight against Texas…with CC on the hill, I really dont expect much trouble…

…So I blink and the Cubs score 6 runs and win 7-2. s’aight. Astros arent exactly a team I expected to hold a 1-run lead. They actually remind me of the New Jersey Nets’ poor start to this recently ended NBA season. 0-18 was it? They made a run for the most losses ever? Pretty bad.
Astros are 1-9 right now. I know its WAY too early, but what do you think are the chances of them catching the 1962 Mets record of 120 losses?
Again, way too early, but I still wanna put it out there.

…One thing its never too early to state is how the Cubs arent winning sh!t this year.
This is mostly in response to the commenter down below, but Ill address it up here.
There is no doubt in ANYONES mind that the Cardinals will win the division this year. There doesnt exist any team that can run with them…at least until that Chapman pitches a full year for the Reds.
The Cubs have no standout player that can lead them to October…hell, I just got done talking about how much they hate their own outfielder. They may not suck as bad as I implied, but by no means are they any good. If theyre lucky, they might scratch out 2nd in the central, and the wild card will not be rolling through Chicago unless its for the White Sox.

Theyre mediocre. And outside of Disney movies, that never cuts it…

MEANWHILE…

From the ‘Stros-Cubbies, we go to two teams on the opposite end of the suck spectrum: Yankees-Rangers.

Sabathia will toe the rubber with Cervelli catching (big shock there) with the hope lightning not only strikes twice, but strikes for 2 innings longer.

Top 1 in New York
…And with a 1 out single, Sabathias no hit bid this time ends at 0.1 innings…

Bottom 4 in New York
Bases loaded. 0 outs. Tie game. Thames at the plate….a big hit here and CC will have no problem tonight…..and he wiffs….Grandersons turn…
…ground ball (DP?) but the throw to 2nd nails Swisher in the back and goes into left field. 2 runs score, Swish to 3rd. Everyones safe! Yankees lead 3-1!!!
And Cervelli singles! 4-1!!! The best back-up catcher in baseball!

End of 6 in New York
…And we are delayed. Game is official, so if it rains out, the 5-1 score will be final. It would be a cheap win, but it would count nevertheless…not like Sabathia was gonna blow it…

Still Raining in New York
…Yeah…..cant we just call this one a win for NY already?

Game Over in New York
Im siiiiiiiiiiiinging in the rain!

Yankees win the rain shortened affair. Does this mean CC gets a Complete Game?
Since this win only required 2/3 of an actual game:

Ynks Wn!
(With the last 3 innings went all the vowels)
